Sound stopped working – Reinstalling Sound Drivers
If your PC’s sound stopped working recently for no apparent reason, you may need to look into reinstalling your sound card drivers.
First, find out what type of sound card you have. Most computers come with a built-in, also known as integrated sound card. Do a search for your motherboard type at http://www.google.com . To find out what type of motherboard you have, look in your computer manual or do a search for your computer’s model number in Google.
Once you have determined the sound card name and model number find the appropriate drivers for it. We recommend first looking at the manufacturer’s website for the latest drivers.
Sound card drivers come in two types:
1) A self-installing exe file. Run the program and the install guide should lead you through the installation process, most likely restarting afterwards. After the reboot your sound should be working.
2) A folder with drivers and files that need to be installed manually – If this is the case, right click My Computer, go to Properties, click the Hardware tab and then click Device Manager. Under “Sound, Video and Game controllers” locate your sound card drivers, right click them and Update Driver.
Click Install from a Specific location, and Next.
Click “Dont Search, I have the driver to Install” and click Next
Click the Have Disk button and locate your drivers. Install and then reboot your PC
If this doesn’t restore your sound return to the “Sound , Video and Game controllers” list and see if the drivers have installed correctly. If they did not install correctly then make sure the driver version matches the operating system you are installing it on. Look for other sources of the driver files on other websites.
If your drivers installed correctly and you still do not have sound, you possibly have a failing sound card or speakers.
